Kunming ranks 25th in Top 100 Cities in China

Updated: May 26, 2021

Kunming, capital city of Southwest China's Yunnan province, moved two places up to be ranked 25th on the 2021 China Top 100 Cities List, according to a report the Warton Economic Institute (WEI) released at a symposium in Beijing on May 21.

Since the first compilation of the annual list in 2015, Shanghai-based WEI has each year selected China's top 110 cities for GDP and ranked them in accordance with "hard" economic indicators such as GDP, residents' savings and financial income and "soft" economic indicators like the environment, science and education, culture and health.

According to the report, the top 100 Chinese cities created a combined GDP of 71.81 trillion yuan last year, accounting for 70.68 percent of the country's GDP of 101.6 trillion yuan. Beijing was the top city on the 2021 list, followed by Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hangzhou.

Kunming scored 48.99, 51.46 and 51.39 in terms of GDP, personal savings and financial income, ranking No 28 in the "hard" economic indicator assessment. Meanwhile, the city scored 74.83, 55.80 and 51.96 for environment, science and education, culture and health, ranking No 25 in the evaluation of those "soft" economic indicators.

Kunming has taken a people-oriented approach to further streamlining the procedures of governmental approvals and improving the local business environment over the past few years.

For instance, it ranked first in an assessment of business environment of all cities in Yunnan in both 2019 and 2020. It has become a national role model in terms of servicing of tendered bids and similar governmental procedures.

Moreover, the city has been praised by both the State Council and the National Development and Reform Commission for its sound performance in intelligent-supported supervision of trading of public resources.
