Updated: June 10, 2021

Scholars, experts and entrepreneurs came up with ideas to boost biodiversity conservation through business and finance at the Business and Biodiversity Forum held on June 6 in Kunming, capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan province.

The event, which was themed “The Business and Finance Journey to Kunming: We are Part of the Solution,” invited guests from institutions and enterprises such as the World Resources Institute, the Center for Foreign Cooperation and Exchange of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment(MEE), CP Group’s agri-food company – Yili Group, and Alibaba Local Life.

The forum lasted for two days and was jointly organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the MEE. In the four sub-forums held during the event, guests conducted in-depth discussions on new trends, cooperation and the development of biodiversity protection supported by business and finance.

The topics included Sustainable Food System Transformation and Quality Development: Enterprises’ Actions in the Conservation of Biological Diversity, Sustainable Land Use: A unified Business Strategy for the Goals of Global Biodiversity, Building Sustainable Supply Chains: Synergy of Forest Use and the Conservation of Biological Diversity, and Global Maritime Conservation Closely Related to Mankind, Earth and the Economy: Prospects and Actions.

The Business and Biodiversity Forum is a parallel event of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), which is themed Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth.

In response to the call of COP15, the Sharm el-Sheikh to Kunming Action Agenda for Nature and People and the International Day for Biological Diversity, the event aims to strengthen global biodiversity partnerships and expand the international influence of Chinese companies and other parties interested in biodiversity conservation.

The warm-up event was jointly organized by the Center for Foreign Cooperation and Exchange of the MEE, the World Economic Forum, and the Office of COP15 Yunnan Provincial Leading Group for Preparatory Work.
