Kunming industrial parks thrive with momentum in 2023

Kunming's industrial parks experienced high-quality economic growth last year. 

Between January and November of that year, Kunming industrial parks registered a total of 918 industrial enterprises above designated size (with annual revenue of over 20 million yuan ($2.79 million), respectively accounting for 33 percent and 81 percent of the provincial industrial parks and the municipal ones. Its total industrial output value reached 448.62 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.7 percent. 

The city has prioritized the development of leading industries and expedited the construction of demonstration bases and industrial clusters. Up to date, Kunming has established four national new industrialization industry demonstration bases and 11 provincial ones. In the first half of 2023, the city organized Kunming High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Kunming Economic and Technological Development Zone, Anning Industrial Park and three other industrial zones to plan for cultivating advanced manufacturing clusters. Four of the six won the title of “provincial advanced manufacturing clusters” in provincial competition. 

In 2023, Kunming industrial parks’ development was driven by innovation. According to the “2022-2023 China Pilot Free Trade Zone System Innovation Index” released by Sun Yat-Sen University, the Kunming area of China (Yunnan) Pilot Free-Trade Zone ranked sixth among the 19 areas of the zone. 

Kunming High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, one of the city’s leading industrial parks, boasts rare and precious metal new materials industry, the biomedicine industry and the digital economy industry. From January to October 2023, the zone generated a total output value of 39.84 billion yuan from enterprises above designated size in three leading industries. The rare and precious metal new materials industry contributed 15.43 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.8 percent. The biomedicine industry contributed 10.32 billion yuan, up 7percent year-on-year. 

Yunnan Shilin Industrial Zone focused on the three major industries of green food deep processing, biomedicine and new building materials. It steadily and orderly promoted the green and low-carbon transformation of traditional industries and built a unique and high-quality ecological industrial system. 

Yunnan Kunming Economic Development Zone launched a new batch of institutional innovation cases in line with Yunnan’s strategic development goals of strengthening three major economies: the resource economy, the port economy, and the industrial park economy. These cases included green-power-supplied industrial park, the China-Laos railway, the Mohan port, intellectual property, and finance. 

Fumin Industrial Zone invited investments in the titanium industry, the pre-made dishes industry, the high-end equipment manufacturing industry, and the new building materials industry. These leading industries accounted for 67.72 percent of the total from January to November of last year.
