Dragon boat racing opens on Dianchi Lake

The 11th China University Dragon Boat Championships and the 2nd Kunming Dianchi International Dragon Boat Racing kicked off on June 17 on Dianchi Lake in Kunming, Yunnan province.

As many as 1,700 competitors of 108 dragon boat teams from home and abroad participated.

This event features three categories: the open category (15 teams from eight countries and regions including China, Germany, Russia, Belarus, Panama, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, and Pakistan), the college category (77 dragon boat teams from 42 colleges and universities from China), and the local and enterprise category (16 dragon boat teams from Yunnan province and enterprises).

In addition to the water-based competitions, this edition of the event has introduced land-based dragon boat activities, along with a dragon boat paddling experience pool in the spectator area. Both on-site spectators and the general public could personally experience the excitement and joy of dragon boat sports by registering.

Kunming is known as a "spring city" owing to its climate. In recent years, the city has hosted many international conferences and important events, such as the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), the China-South Asia Expo, and the SCO Kunming Marathon.

The event aims to help promote traditional Chinese culture and showcases Kunming as a truly livable city.
