The China-Laos railway is expected to launch cross-border passenger trains this year to improve the passenger and cargo transport.

Since the beginning of 2023, the railway has seen a growing momentum in its passenger volume, with the average number of passengers dispatched daily reaching 29,000, almost double that of the same period in 2022.

As of Jan 31,the railway had operated 20,000 passenger trains and handled 10.3 million passenger trips since its launch in December 2021.

Meanwhile, it handled 8.7 million passenger trips for the China section, with daily passengers hitting 65,000, and 1.6 million passenger trips in its Laos section, with daily passengers reaching 8,800.

The number of stations in Laos that can handle passenger service has increased from seven in the initial period to 10.

The railway is expected to handle more than 10 million passenger trips and 13 million metric tons of cargo in 2023.

As a landmark project of the Belt and Road cooperation, the 1,035-km China-Laos Railway connects Kunming, capital of Yunnan, with the Laotian capital Vientiane.
