The second phase of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity is scheduled for Dec 7-19 (Beijing Time) in Montreal, Canada. The theme and logo remain unchanged from the first phase, which was held in Kunming, China, in October 2021.
Yunnan and Kunming elements will be prominent during the event. At the opening ceremony, performances with Yunnan ethnic characteristics vividly demonstrated the colorful culture of the Southwest China’s border province.
Yunnan and Kunming will share their experiences with biodiversity initiatives, their achievements in urban planning, wetland protection and other actions.
It will also discuss effective protection of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, the restoration of the Erhai Lake ecosystem, the rescue and protection of the very small population of Acer japonica, as well as the successful development of the fungus, flower and medicinal herbs.
Kunming is home to more than 5,000 species of wildlife and has the second largest Germplasm Bank of wild species in the world. It has 20 nature reserves, providing protection to about 90 percent of wild animals and plants.
The second part of COP15 follows the first phase of the meeting in Kunming in October 2021. China remains the president of the conference with the theme of "Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth."
China launched the Kunming Biodiversity Fund during the first part of the COP15 in Kunming last year and pledged $230 million to enable developing countries support biodiversity protection.
Through the preparation of COP15 last year, Kunming implemented 28 key projects including smart transportation and public transport. The city has 12,000 5G base stations.
It has renewed urban management, the city's appearance and environment, making its residents very happy.
