Int'l Union of Geological Sciences announces heritage sites, two in Yunnan

The first 100 geological heritage sites in the world have been announced by International Union of Geological Sciences in Spain on Oct 26(Beijing Time), including seven Chinese sites.

The seven sites cover a wide range of earth science fields, such as stratigraphy and sedimentology, paleontology and tectonics.

Two of the seven sites are located in Southwest China’s Yunnan province, Cambrian Chengjiang Fossil Site and Lagerstatte in Chengjiang and Shilin Karst in Kunming.

The Chengjiang fossil site is the only world-level fossil heritage site in Asia. It is an important area in the preservation of Chengjiang biota fossils. It preserves important evidence of the explosion of life in the Cambrian period.

Located in Shilin Yi autonomous county, 78 kilometers southeast of Kunming, Shilin Karst is 1600-1900 meters above sea level and has an average annual temperature of about 16°C. It is the only karst geological wonder in the world located in the subtropical plateau area.
