According to the Seventh National Population Census conducted at the end of 2020, China has 105 big cities, including seven super megacities and 14 megacities. Kunming, the capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan province with a population of 8.46 million, is listed among the megacities. It is also the only “big city” from Yunnan in the 105-member list.
With a combined population of about 290 million, the seven super mega-cities and 14 megacities’ combined gross domestic product is about 33.6 trillion yuan ($5.26 trillion). That means these cities generate 33.1 percent of the national GDP with 20.7 percent of the national population.
