Yunnan boasts a sound base for developing its advanced manufacturing industry as it was the source of China’s first wire, engine and telescope. In recent years, the province has committed to upgrading the industrial system that is dominated by manufacturing, to which goal public companies are regarded as the main driving force.

Kunming’s two listed companies, Kunming Yunnei Power Co., Ltd. and Safety Inside Technology Co., Ltd., are examples that lead the way in continually expanding production and innovation.

Having been engaged in the development of diesel engines for about 60 years, Yunnei is now among China’s leading automobile parts and engine providers.

In 2020, Yunnei Power became the first equipment manufacturing enterprise in Yunnan to see both its total industrial output value and operating income exceed 10 billion yuan($1.39 billion).

Among them, the four-cylinder engine as its main product has won the national sales champion several times, leading high-quality innovation and the development of the industry.

Safety Inside Technology Co., Ltd. has worked with other institutions to establish industry’s standards and technologies. In the first half of 2022, the company’s operating income was 431 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 29.86 percent.

Statistics show that during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), the operating income of the province's advanced equipment manufacturing industry increased from 69.57 billion yuan in 2015 to 150.54 billion yuan in 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 16.7 percent.

The advanced equipment manufacturing industry leads the drive. By 2025, the province's advanced equipment manufacturing industry will strive to achieve 380 billion yuan in operating income and 90 billion yuan in industrial added value, with an average annual growth rate of over 20 percent.
