Kunming sees remarkable growth in tourism

Kunming, the capital city of Southwest China's Yunnan province, has witnessed robust development of its cultural industry on the basis of its rich cultural   and diverse ethnic resources over the past decade.

Kunming has built 40 museums and had 667 registered historical and cultural heritage sites under county-level protection and above. It has ranked first in Yunnan and second in western China in terms of its registered heritage sites. These heritage sites have helped draw a clear picture of its history.

Kunming has built cultural creative venues in industrial areas, bases, buildings, cultural blocks and special towns. There are 34 cultural creative industrial parks (bases) at municipal level and above. The business revenue of local cultural sector hit 33.4 billion yuan ($5.2 billion) in 2021, accounting for 44.1 percent of the total amount of the entire province and marking a dominant status of its cultural creative industry in the province.

Kunming has attached great importance to the industry-driven development approach and basically built modern industries, which are based on modern agriculture, supported by advanced manufacturing and dominated by modern services.

The tourism revenue of Kunming surged from 42.67 billion yuan in 2012 to 238.72 billion yuan in 2021. Meanwhile, its tourist number grew from 46.94 million to 174.12 million during the same period. Statistics show that the city saw 104 million visits with a gross revenue of 119 billion yuan during the first half of this year.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Kunming will closely position itself as a "Spring City", a historical and cultural city, an international healthcare city and an international key city in the region. It will grasp the development opportunities brought about by the expansion of domestic demand and the upgrading of consumption, consolidate the convergence of development resources,   and create a leading and world-class destination for healthcare & tourism.
