Kunming banks on new energy, precious metals and intelligent manufacturing

Updated: May 13, 2022

The first quarter saw Kunming make breakthroughs in the lithium-ion battery, precious metals, and intelligent manufacturing industries, with expanding leading players and upgrading chains.

Kunming has welcomed key new energy battery projects that will achieve output value of 200 billion yuan($29.5 billion) after put into operation. The industry clusters will help complete the industrial chain and shape the capital of Yunnan province as a leading new energy battery industry base in China.

With abundant wind and solar energy resources, Kunming’s Fumin county has quickly moved towards the goal of "building a low-carbon, safe and efficient energy supply base". As of 2021, the five wind power sites in Fumin had on-grid electricity generation reaching 720 million kWh and a total output value of 270 million yuan.

The Yunnan Precious Metal New Material Industrial Park plans to build an operation center that integrates precious metal materials and new functional materials deep processing, testing and incubation within 5 to 8 years. The new output value of the "one center and two parks" will reach 40 billion yuan

Kunming launched an intellectual property center on April 25 to encourage the development of the industry.

On July 23, 2021, the first phase of Wingtech's intelligent manufacturing park was put into operation, and the first "Made in Yunnan" 5G mobile phone was successfully rolled out. Kunming has taken a solid step towards manufacturing intelligent 5G terminals, achieving a total industrial output value of 15.4 billion that year. The company will facilitate Kunming into the largest intelligent manufacturing center in western China. It is expected that the annual output value of the park will not be less than 60 billion yuan.
