Kunming receives over 5.19 million tourists during May Day Holiday

Data from the Kunming Culture and Tourism Bureau show that Kunming received over 5.19 million tourists during the May Day Holiday, an increase of 141.50 percent year-on-year, and realized tourism revenue of 3.74 billion yuan ($581.6 million), an increase of 136.40 percent.

During the May Day Holiday, the number of trips per capita was 0.86 for permanent residents. Excursions to nearby “flower” themed attractions such as jacaranda on Jiaochang Middle Road, rose on Anning Eighth Street and wild azalea sea in Red Deer Pond, were most favored by local residents.

Red tourism was another popular choice for locals. During the holiday, many visited red tourism spots such as the Yunnan Military Academy Museum, the former residence of Zhu De, and the Kedu Memorial of the Long March. The Yunnan Military Academy Museum alone received 30,937 tourists.

Apart from self-service tours, team tours also boomed. During the holiday, Kunming travel agencies received a total of 1,646 tour groups, a 9.48-fold increase year-on-year, and received 21,665 group tourists, an increase of 443.19 percent year-on-year. The tourist  reception in many scenic spots increased over 100% year-on-year.  Yunnan Stone Forest Geological Park received 47,333 tourists, an increase of 123.82 percent year-on-year; Yunnan ethnic villages welcomed 31,619 tourists, a increase of 210.60 percent year-on-year; and the Xishan scenic area, a national-level tourist attraction of Kunming Kunyang Lake (also known as Dianchi), was targeted by 97,706 tourists, an increase of 130.24 percent year-on-year.
