Yunnan Normal University, formerly the teaching college of National Southwestern Associated University (Xinan Lianda), was set up in 1946. It was named Yunnan Normal University in 1984.

The university covers 220 hectares and has established 24 departments and two independent colleges covering 11 disciplines such as literature, history, philosophy, law, teaching, management, science and engineering. It has 93 undergraduate programs, with 17 listed as provincial key majors. It has more than 32,000 full-time doctoral, master’s and undergraduate students.

The university runs over 40 scientific research institutes in areas such as the quality supervision and inspection of solar water heaters, tourism and renewable energy sources. Its library has 3.4 million books. The university employs more than 2,400 staff members, 887 of whom hold senior titles.

It has carried out international communication and cooperation with over 160 universities and scientific research institutes from more than 60 countries and regions such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Macao.

After years’ development, the university has educated more than 16,000 international students from over 80 countries, and is one of the universities in Yunnan enrolling large numbers of overseas students.
